Majority of young adults say they are ‘more concerned than excited’ about AI: Pew Research

Fox News · 2 hours ago

A Pew Research survey has found that a majority of young adults now express greater apprehension than enthusiasm regarding artificial intelligence's expanding presence in daily life. Among those aged 18 to 29, 55 per cent reported feeling more concerned than excited about AI, whilst only 11 per cent held the opposite view, revealing a pronounced divergence in sentiment toward the technology.

This finding represents a marked reversal compared to 2021, when Pew first began tracking public attitudes toward AI and found only 31 per cent of young adults prioritising worry over enthusiasm. The survey suggests that as AI capabilities have advanced and integrated further into society, younger generations have grown increasingly sceptical. Concerns about the technology's impact on employment opportunities and broader economic prospects appear to be driving this shift across multiple age demographics.

  • 55% of young adults report greater worry than excitement about AI; only 11% feel the opposite
  • Significant shift from 2021, when just 31% expressed primary concern over excitement
  • Anxiety centred on AI's impact on employment and economic prospects across all age groups
