USGS ·

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck 25 kilometres north-northeast of Ruteng, the capital of Manggarai Regency on Flores Island in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province, on 19 August 2026. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake occurred at 22:45:17 UTC at a depth of 10 kilometres, centred at approximately 8.39°S, 120.53°E. A depth of this kind is generally classed as shallow, meaning shallow-focus earthquakes of this magnitude are typically felt more strongly at the surface than deeper events of similar size, though the region's moderate distance from Ruteng itself would have tempered the intensity experienced in the town.

The USGS assigned the event a green alert level for both shaking impact and secondary ground-failure hazards, indicating that little to no damage or casualties were expected as a result of the earthquake. Modelled ground-motion data suggested a maximum Modified Mercalli Intensity of around VI, corresponding to strong shaking capable of causing slight damage to poorly constructed structures, though this was a computer-generated estimate rather than a confirmed on-the-ground assessment. No tsunami was generated by the earthquake. As of the USGS's reporting, only a handful of "Did You Feel It?" responses had been logged, yielding a Community Determined Intensity of around IV (light shaking), and no independent news reports of injuries, deaths or structural damage had emerged. Indonesia sits within the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, where the collision of tectonic plates around Flores and the wider Nusa Tenggara island chain regularly produces earthquakes of this magnitude.
