A grandmother’s tragedy: Heartbroken Ukrainian looks on as her grandson’s body is pulled from rubble after Russian missile hits apartment block

Daily Mail ·

A Russian missile barrage on Kyiv killed at least 15 people and wounded around 40 others, in one of the fiercest bombardments of the war, with a grandmother filmed in anguish as her grandson's body was pulled from the rubble of his apartment block. The attack struck 12 locations across the Darnytskyi, Sviatoshynskyi and Solomianskyi districts, damaging homes, a medical facility and a school, and underscores the continuing toll of Vladimir Putin's war on Ukrainian civilians despite ongoing international efforts to broker peace.

Ukraine's air force said Russia fired dozens of ballistic, cruise and hypersonic missiles alongside 168 drones overnight, of which air defences downed 145 drones and most cruise missiles, but none of the ballistic missiles. In Solomianskyi district the top two floors of a nine-storey residential building were destroyed and fires broke out on other floors, while people were trapped in two residential buildings and a school shelter. President Volodymyr Zelensky called it a "massive attack" aimed at maximising damage to civilian infrastructure, and renewed his appeal for more US-made Patriot interceptors, warning that Russia would not seriously consider peace while Ukraine lacks sufficient anti-ballistic defence.
