New hands-on details have emerged from a FromSoftware preview event in Tokyo, revealing more about how The Duskbloods actually plays. Game director Hidetaka Miyazaki said he wants the eight-player format to produce "unexpected drama," and the game is best described as PvPvE — most of each match involves fighting environmental monsters, with direct player-versus-player combat concentrated in a final showdown. A journalist who played the network test build won five of eight matches by focusing on environmental combat rather than confrontation, though PvP-focused rivals won other rounds, underlining the multiple viable strategies on offer.

The preview also detailed the game's mechanics and cast. Matches, called Dusk Battles, involve eight players (solo or in duos) and last roughly 25-30 minutes. Players control prebuilt characters called Bloodsworn, who can "Howl" to stagger enemies and then "Drink Blood" to heal or temporarily convert foes into allies, alongside shared traversal moves such as triple jumps and air dashes. Six Bloodsworn are playable in the upcoming network test, including sword-and-gun fighter Albert and diving-suit brawler Zork, with more promised for the full 2026 launch on Nintendo Switch 2, including one character who can transform into a dinosaur.

  • Preview reveals The Duskbloods is mostly PvE with a final PvP showdown.
  • Bloodsworn characters "Howl" to stagger foes, then "Drink Blood" to heal.
  • Six of more Bloodsworn characters playable in network test; game launches 2026.

The Duskbloods is an upcoming action game from FromSoftware, the Japanese studio behind titles such as Elden Ring and Dark Souls, led by director Hidetaka Miyazaki. It is being made for Nintendo's Switch 2 console and is due for release in 2026, with players controlling pre-made characters known as Bloodsworn as they battle both computer-controlled monsters and each other.

Each round, called a Dusk Battle, involves eight players, either alone or in pairs, in matches lasting around 25 to 30 minutes. The game blends cooperative and competitive elements: players mostly fight environmental enemies together before a final phase where direct combat between rivals decides the outcome, meaning success can come from different styles of play rather than just aggression.

The story follows recent hands-on previews of the game ahead of launch, where journalists and players have been testing an early build to get a sense of how matches unfold and how the various playable characters and abilities work in practice.
