A new Golden Axe animated series, based on the classic 1989 SEGA arcade and Genesis beat-'em-up, will begin streaming on Paramount+ from 16th September. The show adopts an irreverent, self-referential comedic tone and features numerous nods to the original games, including the character select screen and familiar items, though this style of humour has divided early reaction from viewers and commentators alike.

The series follows warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead as they reunite to stop the villain Death Adder, with their efforts complicated by a new character, the inept aspiring hero Hampton Squib. Australian actor Liam McIntyre (soon to voice Wolverine in Marvel's Wolverine) plays Ax, alongside Matthew Rhys as Gilius and Lisa Gilroy as Tyris. The show is co-created by Mike McMahan and Joe Chandler, the latter known for his work on American Dad, and was first mooted for Comedy Central back in 2024 before landing at Paramount+.
