Paramount Plus has released the first trailer for its new animated series based on Sega's classic beat-'em-up Golden Axe, confirming the late-1980s arcade game's return as a comedy show. The series follows in the footsteps of Paramount's live-action Sonic the Hedgehog films as another Sega adaptation, and its self-referential humour and tone are being pitched at fans of The Legend of Vox Machina.

The show reunites warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead as they attempt to stop the seemingly unkillable giant Death Adder, with their mission complicated by a bumbling newcomer named Hampton Squib. The voice cast includes Matthew Rhys, Lisa Gilroy, Liam McIntyre and Carl Tart as the returning characters, alongside Community's Danny Pudi as the new addition Squib. All ten episodes of Golden Axe will be released together on Paramount Plus on Wednesday 16 September.
