Master P Talks No Limit Legacy, Snoop Dogg, His NBA Stint & Why Rap Label Imprints Have Faded

Billboard · 3 hours ago

Rap mogul Master P has spoken to Billboard about the legacy of his No Limit Records label, ahead of a co-headlining arena tour with Birdman's Cash Money Records, kicking off on 11 September in Houston. The two New Orleans-founded labels, once seen as rivals, shaped the sound of Southern hip-hop from the 1990s onward, and Master P says the joint tour is meant to promote unity, raise awareness of mental health and let fans see two dynasties "come together" after decades of competition.

In the interview, Master P recalls negotiating an unusually favourable 85-15 profit split with Priority Records, which he contrasts with less generous industry deals of the era, and reflects on No Limit's roster, including Mystikal, Silkk the Shocker, Mia X and Snoop Dogg, plus his son Lil' Romeo. He also touches on his brief pre-season NBA stints, ventures into film, food products and wrestling, his mentorship of NBA star DeMar DeRozan, and his view that authentic hip-hop label imprints have largely disappeared from the modern industry.
