Sriram Raghavan Developing New Thriller in the ‘Johnny Gaddaar’ Zone for India’s Matchbox Shots as ‘Operation Safed Sagar’ Soars on Netflix Charts (EXCLUSIVE)

Variety · 3 hours ago

Indian filmmaker Sriram Raghavan is developing a new thriller for Mumbai-based Matchbox Shots, set in the same tonal territory as his acclaimed 2007 neo-noir heist film "Johnny Gaddaar," which turns 20 next year. The move comes as the production house expands its slate off the back of the global Netflix success of its war series "Operation Safed Sagar," reinforcing Matchbox's growing reputation for genre-spanning, distinctive storytelling.

Raghavan told Variety he is working on two projects with Matchbox: an adaptation of a true crime story and a fiction thriller inspired by the "Johnny Gaddaar" era, though no title has been settled yet. Beyond his projects, Matchbox's slate includes a second season of "Scoop" with Hansal Mehta, an untitled dark comedy thriller from Vasan Bala, and another untitled thriller from Jasmeet Reen. The company's roots trace back to "Andhadhun," its 2018 breakout hit that grossed $62.4 million worldwide from a $1.7 million budget, with $47.1 million coming from China alone, making it one of the highest-grossing Indian films ever released there.
