Tampa straight-edge hardcore band Contention have surprise-released a new EP, "Nuclear Summer," dropping it at midnight without prior warning. The release follows their appearance at Sound And Fury, the major Los Angeles hardcore festival, and comes hot on the heels of similar surprise drops from fellow hardcore acts Haywire and God's Hate in the festival's aftermath.

The EP features two new original tracks, "Second Sun" and "Blank Stare," alongside a cover of the Swarm's 1999 straight-edge anthem "Upside Your Head" and its accompanying intro, "X On Our Knees." Vocalist Cosmo Vidussi described the record as addressing themes of modern annihilation and nuclear anxiety, calling it "hardcore for the end times." Contention will support the release with tour dates running from late September through mid-November, including stops in Florida, Tennessee, Georgia and a Miami show alongside Madball and Pain Of Truth. Nuclear Summer is out now via the label DAZE.
