Double Fine Owns IP and Publishing Rights for All of Its Games Following Xbox Split, Psychonauts Studio Confirms

IGN · 5 hours ago

Double Fine Productions has reclaimed intellectual property ownership and publishing control of its entire catalogue following its separation from Microsoft's Xbox division. Studio leadership confirmed that whilst some platforms may still display Microsoft as the rights holder, the transition is underway and the developer now receives direct revenue from sales of titles including Psychonauts and Kiln. This reversal was part of a broader Xbox restructuring announced in early August that also granted independence to Compulsion Games and resulted in over 3,200 layoffs across Microsoft's gaming operations.

To sustain operations after shedding a quarter of its workforce, Double Fine is pursuing multiple strategies including a crowdfunded game jam campaign launching this week and continued development support for its pottery-themed multiplayer title. Leadership indicated that directing purchasing power toward the studio's back catalogue provides meaningful financial support, whilst additional unannounced projects remain in development. The studio is also pricing its recent release more aggressively to boost accessibility and sales.

  • Double Fine Productions has regained full IP and publishing rights for all games released during its Microsoft partnership following its split from Xbox.
  • The studio, which experienced 25% layoffs after the transition, is now relying on direct game sales revenue and launching a Kickstarter-funded indie game jam to extend its operational runway.
  • CEO Tim Schafer confirmed other projects are in development whilst the team continues updating their existing titles.
