Destructoid has published a work-in-progress guide to catching every creature in the game How to Fish. It matters because catches are tied to specific islands, rods and baits, including boss encounters that require unusual items.

The starting Lighthouse area contains rock crabs, shrimp and lobsters, caught with the Crab Fishing Rod using free lures or hot dogs. On Island 2, the Forest, players can catch species including piranha, mackerel, gar, pike, cod, goldfish, perch and triggerfish; the guide also lists a Giant Piranha boss requiring a Modified Leech, while the Lighthouse Spider Crab needs an Empty Beer Can.
