HBO Max’s R-Rated 116-Minute Action Sci-Fi Sequel Is Officially a Streaming Smash Hit

Polygon · 3 hours ago

Mortal Kombat 2 has become HBO Max’s most-watched film after underperforming in cinemas, potentially improving the prospects for a third instalment. Its streaming performance matters because Warner Bros. had not confirmed Mortal Kombat 3 following a theatrical run that was modest relative to the sequel’s reported budget.

Released in cinemas on 8 May 2026, the R-rated, 116-minute film grossed $129 million worldwide: $79.7 million domestically and $49.7 million internationally, against a reported $80 million production budget. It arrived digitally on 9 June, reached HBO Max in July and is now number one on the service by a wide margin according to FlixPatrol; director Simon McQuoid said a sequel decision would depend on the film’s full release cycle.

  • Mortal Kombat 2 is now HBO Max’s leading streamed film.
  • Its $129 million cinema gross left Mortal Kombat 3 uncertain.
  • Strong streaming may revive prospects for another sequel.
