King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard brought E Street Band drummer Max Weinberg on stage as a surprise guest during their Saturday night concert at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, part of a three-show residency there. The band had hoped to repeat a recurring cameo from his son, former Slipknot drummer Jay Weinberg, who had guested with them the previous weekend at their Field of Visions II festival in Colorado, but Jay was tied up in Nashville and instead phoned his father to step in.

Guitarist Joey Walker explained the switch to the crowd, noting that Max had driven up from Atlantic City for the appearance, before joking about his own nerves as the veteran drummer walked on stage. Weinberg, best known for his decades with Bruce Springsteen and as bandleader on Conan O'Brien's late-night shows, played as a second drummer during an extended version of the song "Hot Water". The Forest Hills run concluded that Saturday, with the Australian psych-rock band moving on to a show in Brooklyn at Under the K Bridge Park the following night.

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard are an Australian rock band known for changing musical styles and for energetic live shows that can feature long, improvised versions of their songs. They have built a large international following and often tour extensively, including multi-night runs in major cities.

Max Weinberg is an American drummer best known for playing with Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and for leading the house band on late-night television programmes hosted by Conan O’Brien. His son, Jay Weinberg, is also a drummer, having played with metal band Slipknot as well as appearing with King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard.

Having two drummers on stage is a familiar feature in some rock performances, adding extra rhythmic layers and allowing songs to be extended. The appearance also links King Gizzard’s recent live collaborations with Jay Weinberg to his father’s longer-established career.
