Anthony Bourdain's formative years were deeply influenced by the defiant spirit of 1970s rock music, particularly the feral energy of Detroit bands that aligned with his youthful ideals of rejecting societal constraint. Though he later grappled with genuine criminality through drug addiction, Bourdain ultimately anchored himself to the music that had provided the soundtrack to his teenage ambitions.

At seventeen on New Year's Eve 1973, Bourdain secured tickets to a Greenwich Village concert featuring Blue Öyster Cult, the Stooges, and two emerging New York bands: the nascent Kiss, performing one of their earliest major shows, and Teenage Lust. The evening turned hazardous when Kiss's bassist Gene Simmons culminated their opening set with a fire-breathing display that sent stray fireballs into the crowd, apparently striking at least one spectator who had to be assisted from the venue. Bourdain would later recount this show in a 2010 interview as the finest concert he had ever witnessed, cementing its place in his personal mythology.
