Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is breaking a 60-year franchise tradition by featuring a full puppet episode, with the Enterprise crew transformed into muppets by Jim Henson's Creature Shop in the episode Level-Five Transporter Accident. Unlike Star Wars, which has used puppetry since the 1970s with characters such as Yoda, Star Trek has historically relied on prosthetics and makeup rather than puppets to portray aliens, making this a significant creative departure as the franchise approaches its 60th anniversary next month.

Showrunner Henry Alonso Myers said the team wanted the episode to still feel authentically Star Trek despite the format shift, drawing on advice from former Angel showrunner Jeffrey Bell, who worked on a similarly puppet-themed episode of that show. Ethan Peck's Spock is the only main character left in human form, chosen because his logical nature makes him an effective "straight man" amid the chaos, according to Myers and director Jordan Canning. The episode follows other unconventional instalments in the series, including a musical episode and a part-animated one, and continues the show's approach of attempting bold format experiments not previously tried in the franchise.
