New details have emerged about SpaceX's planned $100 billion "Starbase Louisiana" spaceport, including a construction timeline and the origins of the site. SpaceX aims to begin building the first launch facilities in 2027 and to conduct an initial launch from the Gulf coast site by 2029, according to comments made by company president Gwynne Shotwell in Abbeville, Louisiana. The roughly 125,000-acre plot, known as Pecan Island, became available through a legal settlement resolving lawsuits that accused ExxonMobil of causing pollution and coastal land loss, with state officials saying SpaceX first expressed interest about six months ago.

The location offers strategic advantages beyond sheer space: its southward-facing position gives Starship easier access to polar orbits, where most of SpaceX's planned orbital data-centre satellites are expected to operate, and its proximity to the Intracoastal Waterway allows barge transport to and from the company's existing Starfactory in South Texas.
