Australian progressive metal guitarist Plini has spoken about the moment a Doja Cat performance appeared to lift a guitar solo from his own music, and why he chose not to pursue any legal action over it. During an MTV EMA appearance, Doja Cat performed a heavier version of her hit "Say So" featuring a newly added guitar solo that fans quickly noticed closely resembled the title track from Plini's 2016 album "Handmade Cities", sparking online debate just weeks before the release of his 2020 album "Impulse Voices".

Plini said fans identified the performance's musical director as a self-professed fan of his work, and rather than pursuing compensation he found the episode "hilarious" and welcomed the attention it brought to instrumental prog music. Doja Cat later sent him an apology via Instagram, suggesting the musical director should have approached him to collaborate instead. Plini noted the timing coincided helpfully with his album's press campaign, and "Impulse Voices" went on to rack up one million streams within 60 hours and sell out its vinyl and merchandise runs, despite being released without label support.
