Muchova & Mensik win US Open mixed doubles title
Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik won the US Open mixed doubles title after saving match points in both the semi-final and final. The Czech pair, playing together for the first time, beat Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli 6-3 1-6 10-6, with Mensik serving a 131mph ace on their third championship point to secure the $1m prize and each player’s first Grand Slam title.
Muchova, 30, returned after a small surgery and had recently lost the Wimbledon singles final, while 20-year-old Mensik had never previously played mixed doubles. Their victory came in the revamped event, completed within 48 hours and designed around leading singles players; the format has increased television exposure and offers a prize five times larger than under the previous mixed-doubles structure.
