Chicago motorcycling advocate Mehnoosh Hatami, known as the “Princess of Persia”, died after a crash on Lake Shore Drive on 19 August. Miracle Hall, 25, has been charged with aggravated DUI causing death and other offences, while a judge released her before trial with an ankle monitor despite prosecutors seeking detention.

Police and prosecutors allege Hall rear-ended Hatami’s motorcycle at high speed after an aggressive lane change, dragging the bike before her Ford Fusion caught fire. They say Hall’s blood alcohol level was 0.100, above Illinois’s 0.08 legal limit, and that she discarded a liquor bottle in Lake Michigan after the crash. Hatami, 49, was taken to hospital and died within an hour; she was a mother, grandmother and co-founder of Illinois Rider Escape.
