Meta is issuing a software update for its smart glasses to prevent covert recording when the device’s recording light is covered after filming has begun. The change matters because the glasses have faced growing privacy concerns, including reports of people using them to secretly film or harass others in public.

Previously, recording would not start if the LED was blocked, but users could begin filming and then cover the light; the update will stop the camera if this happens. It is Meta’s second privacy-focused update in under two months, following a measure that disables cameras when the recording light appears physically damaged. However, other methods and inexpensive accessories can still reportedly bypass the light, while Meta says further protections are planned.
