The Mars Volta are an American rock band formed by singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala and guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López after their earlier group, At the Drive-In, split up. Their music combines rock with a range of other influences, and the band has released several albums since forming in the early 2000s.

Mexico has been an important place in the band’s history, particularly for Rodríguez-López, who spent part of his childhood there. Tecate Comuna is a major music festival in Puebla, while the Pepsi Center is a concert venue in Mexico City; the band has played both the festival and the venue before.
