Asian Games hosts run out of rooms for athletes
Organisers of next month’s Asian Games in Japan have told additional athletes to arrange their own accommodation after planned capacity was exceeded. The problem highlights the financial and logistical strain caused by a late increase in competitors, as the event has no dedicated athletes’ village.
About 17,000 athletes and officials are now expected, compared with the 15,000 covered by the host-city agreement and budget, after teqball and padel were added. The Games run from 19 September to 4 October in Nagoya and Aichi; 4,000 to 5,000 people will stay on the Costa Serena cruise ship, 2,000 in container-style huts, and others in Tokyo hotels.
