Xbox’s New Fable Hones the Classic Series’ Combat to Near-Perfection

Polygon · 6 hours ago

Polygon’s hands-on preview says Playground Games’ new Fable has made its combat exceptionally fluid, allowing melee attacks, ranged weapons and magic to be combined quickly without forcing players into a specialist build. The reviewer found the default difficulty deliberately empowering, helping the game deliver the series’ fantasy of becoming an unusually capable hero, while noting that the harder “master” setting remains punishing.

The 30-minute Gamescom demo covered an early quest through an abandoned mine and misty bog, ending in a boss fight against undead enemies. Players can use light and heavy melee attacks, bows or repeater crossbows, and switch spells such as levitation, lightning and fireballs on the fly; the preview did not assess exploration, quests or life-simulation features. Fable is due for Windows PC and Xbox Series X on 23 February 2027.

  • Fable’s combat blends melee, ranged attacks and magic smoothly.
  • Default difficulty prioritises a satisfying power fantasy.
  • The game launches on PC and Xbox Series X in February 2027.
