Rescue teams in northern Nepal have pulled hundreds of people from a mud-filled hydropower tunnel after catastrophic flooding and a mudslide in Rasuwa district. The disaster has caused extensive loss of life, left many people missing and damaged infrastructure near the Nepal–China border, underlining the scale of the emergency and the difficulty of ongoing rescue efforts.

Nepal’s Prime Minister’s Office said 350 people had been rescued from the tunnel, while more than 100 remained trapped, and a further 533 residents had been moved from flooded areas. Authorities reported at least 538 deaths in Nepal and up to 1,924 people unaccounted for; five people were confirmed dead and 558 missing in neighbouring Tibet, while about 90 Americans were among those missing. The US Geological Survey said a glacial collapse following an earthquake may have triggered debris flows and flooding that travelled nearly 100km.
