European football: PSG scramble another draw while Bayern make flying start
Paris Saint-Germain rescued a 2-2 draw at Lille with two stoppage-time goals, extending their difficult start to the Ligue 1 season after also drawing with Rennes. Bayern Munich, meanwhile, began their Bundesliga title defence emphatically with a 5-1 win over Stuttgart, underlining the attacking strength that helped them dominate last season.
Lille led through Hákon Haraldsson and Dilane Bakwa before Vitinha scored in added time and set up Marquinhos’s late equaliser. Bayern’s victory included goals from Dayot Upamecano, Michael Olise, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Luis Díaz, while Stuttgart’s Josha Vagnoman scored both an equaliser and an own goal; elsewhere, Milan beat Venezia 2-0, Racing Santander defeated Elche 3-2, and Alavés won 1-0 at Villarreal.
In short
- PSG salvage late draw at Lille.
- Bayern begin with 5-1 Stuttgart win.
- Milan, Racing and Alavés also win.
Explained simply
European football is organised into national leagues, where clubs play one another over a season to decide the champions. France’s top division is Ligue 1, and Germany’s is the Bundesliga; Paris Saint-Germain, usually called PSG, and Bayern Munich are among the leading clubs in their respective leagues.
PSG have won many recent French titles, while Bayern are defending champions in Germany after dominating the Bundesliga last season. Their results matter to the title races: early dropped points can give rivals an opening, while a strong start can help a champion build momentum.
