Mountain of broken fridges growing across England and Wales

A backlog of broken fridges and freezers is building up at waste sites across England and Wales after heat waves increased appliance failures and reduced recycling capacity. The Local Government Association says dozens of councils have suspended white-goods collections, leaving residents unable to dispose of appliances safely and raising concerns about environmental risks from refrigerant gases.

Twenty-six councils, including Bradford, Gloucestershire, Durham and Nottingham, halted fridge collections this month. Three of the UK’s 10 full-scale fridge-processing plants have closed in the past year, while remaining sites cannot operate above 30°C; appliances are therefore being exported to Europe as a temporary measure. The industry expects recovery to take six to 12 months, and the LGA wants manufacturers to contribute more towards collection, storage and new processing capacity.
