A Trail Tale is an interactive digital trail journal that lets users follow Andy Moliski’s journey along the Appalachian Trail through detailed pixel-art scenes, music and clickable daily entries. The Verge presents it as an evocative alternative for people who cannot undertake a lengthy hike themselves, while also capturing the appeal of reconnecting with the outdoors.

Created by Andy Moliski with help from his brothers Adam and Alex, the project uses a 1990s-style point-and-click adventure aesthetic and an original score blending natural sounds with acoustic instruments. Users can explore landmarks, journey updates, Moliski’s mental state and poetry, while game-like morale and fortitude indicators reflect factors such as weather and scenery.
