Three sisters injured in a head-on collision on the M9 are reportedly making steady progress after surgery, with friends hoping they could leave hospital before the end of September. Their recovery is significant after a crash in which five teenagers travelling in the wrong direction on the motorway died.

Alma Kinsella’s seven-year-old son, Yemi, is said to have recovered after breaking a leg and is being cared for by relatives. The sisters, Ella, Niamh and Alma, had been travelling from Graiguecullen near Carlow to Dublin Airport for a family wedding; a fundraising campaign has raised more than €800,000, while their family has thanked supporters and requested privacy.
