Doom Meets Hades In the Coolest New Action Game of Gamescom 2026
British studio Dlala Studios, best known for its Battletoads reboot and Disney Illusion Island, revealed a new action game called Murals at the 2026 Gamescom Opening Night Live showcase. The game is notable for defying expectations set by its isometric perspective, as CEO Aj Grand-Scutton was keen to stress that Murals is not a roguelike in the mould of Hades, despite surface similarities, but instead draws its core design philosophy from Doom (2016).
Players control a silent protagonist called The Hero, joined by a talking slice of bread named Loaf, as they battle through dark reimaginings of classic fairy tales such as Sleeping Beauty and Rumpelstiltskin, each housed within a "magical mural" that functions as a level. Combat takes place in arena-style rooms using swords, hammers and ranged attacks, with enemy variety rather than complex movesets driving difficulty, echoing Doom's design ethos. Players can also collect permanent upgrade items called Eeries, stack up to nine at once, and unleash a screen-clearing special move called Canvas Clear once a gauge fills, with the developers prioritising fun over strict balance.
