Tuskegee University's president, Dr Mark Brown, has defended the historically Black institution's renewed dress and conduct code, saying it is intended to prepare students for professional life rather than restrict personal expression. The policy requires business attire for classes and formal meetings and bars non-religious head coverings, a move that has drawn criticism from free-expression advocates and been labelled by some as "respectability politics." Brown argues that setting higher standards helps students meet them, and frames the code as part of a broader focus on workplace readiness alongside punctuality, internships and professional certification.

Brown, a retired US Air Force major general, said he observed students adhering to the new standards within the first days of term and insisted the rules are not new but are receiving "greater emphasis." He acknowledged concerns that the requirements could burden students financially, noting that around 70% of the campus is Pell Grant eligible, and pointed to the university's Golden Tigers Community Closet as a resource for students needing help obtaining professional clothing.
