Fable’s main story will take around 15 to 20 hours to complete

Eurogamer · 2 hours ago

Xbox and Playground Games have revealed the first concrete estimate of how long Fable will take to complete, with the main story clocking in at around 15 to 20 hours. The detail emerged during a Q&A session at Gamescom 2026, offering fans a clearer picture of the scope of the long-awaited reboot ahead of its 2027 release.

Associate game director Will Kennedy told Polygon that alongside the 15-20 hour main quest, players can expect a similar amount of side and open-world content, with the game's "life systems" offering effectively limitless additional playtime. Fellow associate director Craig Littler pushed back on suggestions the game was small in scope, noting players could "literally play it forever" if they chose. Fable is set to launch on PS5, PC and Xbox Series X on 27th February 2027, and Eurogamer's own hands-on preview described it as promising, if ambitious, with 1,000 unique romanceable NPCs planned.

Fable is Microsoft's reboot of the fantasy action-RPG series originally made by Lionhead Studios, best known for its comedy-tinged storytelling and moral-choice mechanics. The new version is being developed by Playground Games, the UK studio also known for the Forza Horizon racing series, and is being published by Xbox Game Studios for PS5, PC and Xbox Series X. It has been in development for several years and is one of Microsoft's most closely watched upcoming exclusives, given the series' cult following.

The game is due out on 27th February 2027, and its developers have been gradually revealing more details in the run-up to launch, including at events such as Gamescom. Discussion has centred on the scale of the game, including how big its world is, how much content it offers, and how long it will take players to finish, since fans want reassurance that a long-awaited revival will deliver a substantial experience.

Key figures involved include Playground Games' associate directors, who act as public-facing voices for the project, addressing player questions about scope and depth alongside previews from gaming outlets that have had early hands-on access.
