Marseille's manager Bruno Génésio faces a mounting crisis after a 2-0 defeat away to Monaco exposed the toll of a chaotic summer transfer window. Every player at the club was put up for sale as Marseille scramble to slash their wage bill to satisfy conditions set by Uefa and the French financial watchdog DNCG, which allowed them to play in Europe this season but warned they must cut costs further to do so again next year. Génésio, who replaced Habib Beye as part of a wider club shake-up, admitted the situation was worse than he had anticipated, and though he has ruled out resigning "for now", the pressure is clearly building.

Marseille have sold several key players, including Mason Greenwood, Facundo Medina, Gerónimo Rulli and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with captain Leonardo Balerdi loaned to Roma, yet the proceeds have not been enough to fund any incoming signings. Génésio said three or four more departures are needed before the club can even register one or two new arrivals, with prized winger Igor Paixão now seen as the likeliest sale. Against Monaco, his absence left Marseille light in attack, forcing academy player Keyliane Abdallah into an underwhelming appearance, while defender Geoffrey Kondogbia was jeered by fans after a difficult display, in contrast to the warm reception given to the new manager.
