Britain's Harriet Dart battled back from a set and a break down to beat American Peyton Stearns and reach the second round of the US Open, ending a 19-month wait for a Grand Slam singles win. The 30-year-old, ranked 131st in the world, had not won a main-draw match at a major since the 2025 Australian Open, having since failed to qualify for four of six subsequent Slams and lost in the first round on both her recent Wimbledon wildcard appearances, making this a significant breakthrough result.

Dart came through 3-6 6-3 6-2 against Stearns, who is ranked more than 75 places above her, in a match lasting just under two and a half hours, having also needed three sets in each of her qualifying matches. She joins fellow Britons Toby Samuel and Katie Boulter in the second round, where she will face 25th seed Marie Bouzkova, and credited new team member Marion Bartoli, the 2013 Wimbledon champion, for helping her recent run of form, which includes a Vancouver Challenger quarter-final and Cincinnati Open qualification.
