How Sammy Hagar earned a cool $91m from his favourite drink in 2010
Sammy Hagar, best known for replacing David Lee Roth as Van Halen's frontman in 1985, went on to build a hugely lucrative tequila business founded on his own genuine love of the spirit. Having insisted on performing only original material with Van Halen rather than covering Roth-era songs, Hagar carried the same authenticity into his solo career after leaving the band in 1996, channelling his passion for good tequila into both music and business.
In 1999 he released the song "Mas Tequila" as a tribute to the drink and his experiences in Baja, Mexico, before founding his own brand, Cabo Wabo, made using a traditional family recipe. The venture proved extraordinarily profitable: Hagar sold 80% of his stake in 2007 for $80 million, then offloaded the remainder in 2010 for a further $91 million, making his tequila business far more lucrative than his rock career.
