The NAACP Image Awards have introduced 10 new categories dedicated to African artists for the 58th edition of the ceremony, marking the first time the awards have had categories specifically honouring achievements from the continent. The organisation said the move reflects Africa's growing cultural influence in film, television and music, and is intended to strengthen ties between African creatives and the wider Black diaspora, positioning the Image Awards as a global marker of Black creative excellence.

Submissions across 108 categories, spanning motion pictures, television and streaming, recording, literature and podcasts, are now open via the NAACP Image Awards website, alongside guidelines for entrants. The ceremony will also see the return of four daytime drama categories, covering outstanding series, actor, actress and supporting actor. Nominees will be announced and public voting will open on 7 January, with voting closing on 1 February; a date for the ceremony itself has yet to be confirmed. Eligible entries must be performances or projects released between 1 January and 31 December 2026, following last year's show, hosted by Deon Cole at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
