Democratic Rep. Stephen Lynch has fended off a well-funded progressive primary challenge from attorney Patrick Roath in Massachusetts's heavily Democratic 8th Congressional District, underscoring the limits of the party's left flank in unseating established moderates. The contest was closely watched as a proxy battle in the wider struggle between the Democratic Party's progressive and moderate wings, pitting Lynch's decades-long record of independence from party orthodoxy against Roath's outsider, populist campaign.

Roath, a former aide to ex-governor Deval Patrick, outraised Lynch by roughly $300,000 and secured endorsements from the Boston Globe, David Hogg's Leaders We Deserve, Indivisible and several teachers' unions, while Lynch drew support from the Massachusetts AFL-CIO, ironworkers, firefighters and federal employee groups. The two clashed over immigration, healthcare and housing, with Lynch defending his vote for the Laken Riley Act as a response to a "completely out of control" system, and Roath backing Medicare for All against Lynch's public-option stance. Lynch, 71, first elected in 2001 and a former ironworker, has voted against the Affordable Care Act in the past but has moved leftward on issues such as abortion; his 39-year-old challenger cast himself as a generational and ideological alternative. The Republican nominee, retired telecommunications worker Robert Burke, faces long odds in the solidly Democratic seat.
