Almost half of world’s farmers poisoned by pesticides every year, experts find
A study commissioned by Pesticide Action Network has found that almost half of the world's farmers and farm workers are unintentionally poisoned by pesticides every year, describing a global health crisis that has largely gone unaddressed. Researchers are calling for immediate action, including implementation of a UN recommendation to phase out highly hazardous pesticides, warning that global pesticide use continues to rise despite decades of awareness of its dangers.
Drawing on data from 2006-2023, the study estimated 402-433 million cases of acute pesticide poisoning annually among a global farming population of 934 million, equating to roughly 46%. Southern Asia recorded the highest number of poisonings, while Burkina Faso had the highest national rate, at nearly 84%. The research also linked pesticides to around 11,000 deaths a year, almost 60% of them in India, and noted growing evidence connecting pesticide exposure to Parkinson's disease, though it did not assess long-term health effects or risks to the estimated 84 million children working in agriculture.

Rules relating to pesticide use vary widely from country to country, and enforcement of safety standards is often weak in lower-income farming regions, which employ large numbers of smallholder and informal workers. Pesticide Action Network is an international coalition that campaigns against reliance on chemical pesticides and has long argued for stronger global controls; it commissioned the research behind this study. The United Nations has previously recommended phasing out the most dangerous pesticides, though this recommendation is not binding on individual countries.
Acute pesticide poisoning happens when someone is exposed to harmful chemicals during handling, spraying or contact with treated crops, causing immediate symptoms rather than illness that develops over years. It is distinct from longer-term health effects, which are harder to measure and were not the focus of this research. Agriculture employs hundreds of millions of people worldwide, many in countries where protective equipment, training and regulation are limited.
The issue matters because pesticides underpin much of the world's food production, yet the people who apply them often bear the greatest health risks, frequently in countries with the least capacity to monitor or address the problem. Debate over pesticide safety typically involves a balance between protecting crop yields and food supplies, and protecting the health of agricultural workers and rural communities.
