Photographer Roberta Bayley recalls taking her favourite photograph, a candid shot of Joey Ramone smiling while carrying a surfboard on Coney Island beach, as part of a series in which photographers discuss their best work. The image, taken during a 1976 Punk magazine shoot around the same time Bayley photographed the Ramones for their debut album cover, stands out because it captures the notoriously po-faced punk frontman looking playful and unguarded, a rarity for a band that famously never smiled in photos again after this era.

Bayley, who began photographing bands after moving from London to New York and befriending musicians such as Richard Hell and the Ramones, describes shooting the Coney Island image on Plus-X film, the only time she used that stock. Despite its popularity, Joey Ramone disliked the picture, complaining it made his legs look thin, and the band's label preferred a smiling shot from the album session with a "so punky" tagline, which Joey vetoed. The surfboard photograph, featuring a Schaefer beer can in the background, has since become Bayley's best-selling print, owned by fans including Eddie Vedder, Karen O and producer Andrew Watt.
