Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to remake the 2012 Korean thriller "Confession of Murder," with screenwriter Chris MacBride hired to write the script. Glen Powell and Dan Cohen's Barnstorm banner will produce alongside Naomi Funabashi and Rishi Rajani of Winged Tiger, marking the latest project for Powell's growing production company as it builds out a slate with the studio.

The original film centred on the investigation triggered when a suspected serial killer, protected from prosecution by the statute of limitations, publishes a memoir detailing his crimes; it starred Jung Jae-Yung and was directed by Jung Byung-gil. Universal's Christine Sun is overseeing the remake, with details of MacBride's take on the story kept under wraps. The deal continues a busy run for Barnstorm, which is also developing a Lou Gehrig biopic with Universal and Richard Linklater, and for MacBride, who recently sold projects to Netflix and Amazon MGM Studios.
