Nvidia will officially bring DLSS 5 to older GPUs — but won’t give gamers full control
Nvidia has confirmed that its new DLSS 5 AI rendering technology will officially be extended to older RTX 40-series graphics cards, reversing earlier plans to launch it solely on the newer RTX 50-series. The reversal comes after modders had already leaked and adapted DLSS 5 to run on a wide range of GPUs, pushing its settings well beyond what Nvidia intended to allow, which appears to have prompted the company to act faster on broader official support than originally planned.
Nvidia says its immediate priority remains tuning performance for RTX 50-series cards, with model updates expected later this autumn, before turning to official RTX 40-series support; RTX 30 and RTX 20-series GPUs, which modders also managed to target with mixed results, are not yet on the roadmap. The company also confirmed that gamers will only get a simple on/off toggle for DLSS 5, with detailed artistic controls such as Structure Intensity, Tone Intensity and masking options reserved for developers, though studios may choose to expose some settings themselves. Nvidia declined to reconfirm its original list of 17 launch titles, including Assassin's Creed Shadows, Hogwarts Legacy, Starfield and Resident Evil Requiem, saying only that "more games are on the way" as partners finalise integration.

They would also note that prioritising RTX 50-series optimisation before extending official support to older cards reflects sound engineering discipline rather than neglect, given that rushing untested configurations to a wider hardware base risks a poor experience that reflects badly on the technology itself. Staging the rollout, and declining to lock in a game list before partners have finished integration, can be seen as responsible under-promising rather than evasiveness.
The case against
Critics, including many enthusiasts and modders, would argue that gamers who own capable hardware have a reasonable expectation of being given full control over features that visibly affect the images on their own screens, especially when independent modders have already demonstrated that broader access and deeper customisation work perfectly well in practice.
