Check out Violet Grohl’s dreamy cover of The Cure’s ‘High’: “It’s such a cute love song”

NME · 2 hours ago

Violet Grohl has recorded a stripped-back cover of The Cure's 1992 single 'High' for Triple J's 'Like A Version' series, performing the track with just an acoustic guitar alongside her own recent single '595'. The singer-songwriter, daughter of Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, is a longstanding Cure fan and used the session to showcase both her admiration for Robert Smith's band and material from her debut album 'Be Sweet To Me'.

Grohl described 'High' as one of her favourite Cure songs, praising its "beautifully The Cure" instrumental arrangement and calling it "such a cute love song" for its playful, romantic imagery. She traced her fandom back to hearing 'Friday I'm In Love' aged 12 or 13, which led her to dive into the band's discography. The session follows her debut Reading & Leeds festival appearances last weekend, after she postponed two UK shows due to illness, and comes as The Cure themselves wrap up a European and UK summer tour that included Manchester's Wythenshawe Park and festival dates at Isle Of Wight, Primavera Sound and Rock en Seine.

Violet Grohl is a singer-songwriter and the daughter of Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, currently building her own career with a debut album called 'Be Sweet To Me'. She has a long-standing love of The Cure, the veteran British rock band fronted by Robert Smith, tracing back to hearing their song 'Friday I'm In Love' as a young teenager.

The recording in question was made for Triple J's 'Like A Version', a long-running Australian radio segment in which musicians perform a cover song alongside one of their own tracks. The Cure's original song 'High' was released in 1992 and is one of the band's well-known singles.

The performance also comes amid a busy period for both acts: Grohl recently made her first appearances at the UK's Reading and Leeds festivals, while The Cure have been finishing up a European and UK tour that took in various festival dates and arena shows.
