Sting has admitted he still doesn't fully understand the meaning of "I Hung My Head", a track from his 1996 solo album Mercury Falling, despite the song going on to become one of his most enduring compositions. The frontman also confessed he had forgotten how to play the riff himself, relying instead on his longtime guitarist Dominic Miller to perform and develop it, an unusual admission from a songwriter otherwise known for crafting era-defining hits such as "Roxanne" with the Police.

The song tells the dark story of a man who accidentally shoots someone from horseback and must face the consequences in court, yet Sting has said he remains unsure of its precise meaning, only pointing to the moment the character admits to feeling "the power of death over life" while handling the gun. Despite, or perhaps because of, this ambiguity, the track found a wider audience when Johnny Cash covered it in 2002, cementing its status as a country music favourite. Sting's comments suggest that the song's unresolved, morally ambiguous narrative may be central to its lasting appeal.
