The A24-distributed indie comedy "The Invite" has become an unexpected breakout hit of the summer box office, taking in more than $55 million worldwide despite competing against blockbusters such as "The Odyssey" and "Spider-Man: Brand New Day". Directed by and starring Olivia Wilde alongside Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz and Ed Norton, the film's success is notable for its near-even split between domestic and international earnings, and for proving that adult comedies can still draw large cinema audiences amid a market dominated by franchises.

A24 acquired US rights after a bidding war at Sundance for over $10 million, and the film has since grossed $25.6 million domestically after expanding from a $380,000 limited opening to 1,600 screens. International takings stand at $29.7 million across 50 territories, with major markets including Italy, France and Spain still to come. Producer David Permut, who co-produced with FilmNation and Annapurna, says he hopes to adapt the story—originally a Spanish stage play by Cesc Gay—into a Broadway production next year, though details remain unconfirmed.
