Ron Howard has revealed that a decades-old piece of criticism, calling his films "mild entertainments" lacking artistic depth, has stuck with him despite his hugely successful career. The remark, made by critic David Thomson in his Biographical Dictionary of Film, struck a nerve because Howard has long strived to please audiences, yet acknowledges that pleasing everyone is an impossible goal for any filmmaker.

The criticism first came up during a 2001 interview with the Washington Post, in which Thomson argued that Howard's virtues "pale in the larger blandness of his works." Howard responded candidly, admitting "that doesn't make me feel happy," while conceding that he and Thomson likely wouldn't agree on the same films. He noted that the comment would have stung more had he pursued art-house filmmaking rather than mainstream, commercially successful projects, pointing to works such as Apollo 13, which earned nine Academy Award nominations, as evidence of his broader impact.
