The UK's unsettled autumn weather pattern is set to continue this week, bringing wet and windy conditions, particularly to the north, before a calmer, cooler spell arrives midweek. This follows a brief heat spike on Sunday, with temperatures reaching nearly 29C in south-east England, but conditions will feel noticeably fresher for many parts of England and Wales as low pressure systems and weather fronts move through from the north-west.

Monday will bring a band of cloud and showers across England and Wales, with sunny spells following and temperatures peaking at 25C in the south-east, while heavier rain and strong southwesterly winds hit Northern Ireland, Scotland and Cumbria, limiting temperatures there to around 17C. Tuesday will see gusts of 50-60mph in northern and western Scotland alongside frequent showers, while lingering rain clears the south-east by morning; much of England and all of Wales remain in drought despite last week being England's wettest since early February. From Wednesday, rising pressure will bring drier, calmer conditions with lighter winds and near-average temperatures, peaking at 22C in the south-east, before showers return to western areas on Thursday and clear eastward by Friday.
