Actress Betty Gilpin won her first Emmy, taking the Guest Actress in a Comedy Series award for her role as the tragic 18th-century character Sarah Westcott Warren in Apple TV's breakout series Widow's Bay. During her acceptance speech on Night 2 of the 2026 Emmys, Gilpin delivered an unusual, poem-based speech written on her phone, reflecting on her acting career and urging fellow artists to "lean towards Sam Shepard, and less toward Sam Altman" to cheers from the audience at the Peacock Theater.

Gilpin said she was inspired to prepare remarks after co-nominee Hamish Linklater, who plays her husband on the show, warned her on a flight that winning was a "scientific possibility". The award marked a strong night for Widow's Bay, which beat out HBO Max's Hacks (whose star Kaitlin Olson had been the frontrunner) and is now leading all shows with eight wins ahead of the main Emmy telecast on 14 September. It was Gilpin's fourth Emmy nomination overall, following three previous nods for Netflix's GLOW.
