Tukaram Mundhe, Maharashtra's newly appointed food commissioner, has become an unexpected social media celebrity in India after launching a sweeping crackdown on food safety violations since taking up the role in May. His department's inspections have exposed shocking hygiene failures – including cockroach infestations and spoiled food – even at exclusive establishments such as a members-only club in Mumbai, with footage of the raids going viral. The campaign matters because it has made enforcement visible and public in a way India's food safety system rarely achieves, where complaints typically languish for years in slow-moving regulatory and legal processes.

By the end of July, Mundhe's team had conducted more than 3,100 inspections, a figure he believes has since exceeded 4,000, resulting in around 300 suspended licences and over 1,000 improvement notices. A new complaints portal received more than 16,000 submissions within its first three months. The crackdown reflects a wider national problem, with parliamentary data showing nearly one in five of 223,808 food samples tested across India in 2025 and 2026 were found unsafe, substandard or mislabelled. A veteran civil servant known for frequent transfers due to his uncompromising style, Mundhe previously won praise for his handling of Nagpur's Covid response, and his current campaign has drawn both public admiration and institutional friction.
