Nahji Chu, owner of Sydney restaurant Lady Chu in Potts Point, has gained attention for firing back at customers who leave one-star reviews on Google, rather than simply absorbing the criticism. Rather than harming the business, the tactic has boosted its profile, with the restaurant even earning a mention in Qantas magazine as a must-visit venue after one particularly viral exchange.

Chu's retorts have included telling a Valentine's Day diner that "your girlfriend looked really bored," accusing a rival Vietnamese business owner of "sabotage" for recommending another restaurant, and thanking one lengthy critic for their "1000-word review thesis." She said she began hitting back after noticing she was getting more one-star than five-star reviews, and told The Betoota Advocate podcast the restaurant is now "packed every night," with the food, staff and her viral responses all drawing in customers. Lady Chu, which opened in 2019 and expanded in 2021, still averages four stars on Google despite the negative reviews.
