The Australian government led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has introduced draft legislation establishing a "digital duty of care" for social media companies, which would let users opt out of algorithm-driven feeds. Under an initiative called "My Feed, My Way", platforms would have to offer users the choice between an algorithmically curated feed or one showing posts only from friends, giving people more control over their online experience. Officials framed the move as empowering individuals rather than government intervention, following on from Australia's earlier world-first ban on social media for under-16s.

Alongside the feed choice, companies would be legally required to protect users from harmful content, including material promoting eating disorders, misogyny, pornography or glorification of crime. Firms that fail to meet the duty of care could face fines of up to $100 million. Communications Minister Anika Wells said the reform was about giving adults choice rather than control, warning tech companies of a "global reckoning" and that they would no longer be allowed to "break things" given the real-world harms caused online.
