Music venue to reopen in 2027 after refurbishment

The O2 Academy Sheffield is set to reopen in February 2027 after a four-year closure for major refurbishment, following its shutdown in September 2023 over safety concerns about unstable "crumbly concrete" in the roof. The reopening matters to the local music scene, as venue owners Academy Music Group say the site has been sorely missed by promoters and touring artists during its closure.

The venue closed due to reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (Raac), a lightweight material that the Health and Safety Executive warned could collapse without notice. Sheffield City Council approved plans in February to replace the problematic roof deck, and the refurbished venue will also feature air conditioning and a new sound system. Originally opened in 1968 as the Top Rank Suite and acquired by AMG in 2008, the Arundel Gate venue has hosted acts including David Bowie, The Clash, The Killers and Stormzy over its history.
